Bee keeping flourishing in Nawalparasi

Parasi, June 16: Farmers in Nawalparasi district have been attracted towards bee keeping of late as it has turned out to be a good source of income.

Jaylal Paudel, who has started bee-keeping installing five hives at his home in 2065 B.S., produces more than 550 kilograms of honey in a season. Generally, honey is harvested in two seasons, before the beginning of winter and with the beginning of spring seasons.

Paudel is now a owner of Jayadurga Micro Industry Bee Keeping Resource Centre.Paudel said, "There is no loss from bee keeping. We could save around 50 per cent of income by deducting other expenses for the business." Paudel earns Rs. 150,000 annually by selling honey.

Similarly, another bee-keeper, Manarupa Upadhyay, makes 50 kg of honey from nine hives in a season.

Two persons are enough to look after 40 hives, but up to five persons are paid in the season, said Paudel.

He questioned the attitude of the youths who prefer to go to foreign countries in search of jobs.

Around 10 persons including Dan Bahadur Shrestha, Bhanubhakta Gautam, Danda Pani Gautam are running commercial bee-keeping in Sunawal alone.

Around 10 quintals of honey is produced from Sunawal VDC alone in a season. Besides this, people in Gaidakot, Kawasoti, Mukundapur and others VDCs have made bee keeping their way of livelihood. RSS
