Kathmandu,
June 14: The First National School Sports (Junior Championship) 2070 BS has
kicked-off from today.
Chairman of the Interim Election
Council (IEC), Khil Raj Regmi, inaugurated the Championship jointly organized
by National Sports Council (NSC), HISSAN, PABSON and N-PABSAN in the capital
from today.
Speaking at the inaugural programme,
IEC Chairman Regmi, appreciated the NSC step of coordination with the private
sector and expressed his happiness that NSC has opened the door for producing
sportsmen from school level.
Chairman Regmi wished, "The
move would turn to be a milestone for the development of the overall sports
sector and will be helpful to make Nepal
known in the international arena."
Minister for Youth and Sports, Ram
Kumar Shrestha, hoisted the flag of the NSC and said that sports could
contribute in maintaining discipline in the feeling of competition.
During the programme, Minister
Shrestha gave away prizes to the winners of various events in athletics,
cricket, and kabaddi.
Member-secretary of the NSC, Yubaraj
Lama, said the First National School Championship was organized with a view to
producing sportsmen that could make Nepal known in the international community.
PABSON Chairman Dr. Baburam Pokhrel,
N-PABSAN Chairperson Geeta Rana, and HISSAN Chairman Umesh Shrestha, and
Secretary of the School Sports Development Board, Kul Bahadur Thapa, among
others, put forth their views during the programme.
Students of 12-16 years of age could
participate in various events of game that would conclude on June 18.
Taekwando, Karate, Wushu, Athletics,
football, volleyball, basketball, kabaddi, cricket, and chess, among other
games, are included in the championship.
Similarly, there will be open
competition on table tennis, swimming, badminton, and baghchal (tiger and
