Special campaign against human trafficking wraps up

Mangalbare (Ilam), June 24: A month-long special campaign against human trafficking launched by the Maiti Nepal, Pashupatinagar field office, concluded on Sunday.

The campaign was launched in Pashupatinagar, Gorkhe, Jogmai, Mabu, Sriantu, Samalbung, Jirmale and Maimajhuwa VDCs, the VDCs sharing border with India. These VDCs are considered flashpoints for cross-border human trafficking in the district.

As part of the campaign, local police, representatives of the Maiti Nepal, local social workers and social mobilizers of Women Networks constituted in these VDCs carried out a variety of programmes aimed at raising public awareness against the scourge of human trafficking and the community's role in curbing this crime.

The campaign was mostly targeted to schools in these VDCs as it is found that mostly school girls were the soft targets of the human traffickers. It is said incidents of girl trafficking have surged in recent years in Ilam district. RSS
