Rukum, July 5: Fifteen Village Development Committees (VDCs) in Rukum district have been declared as 'Organize Zones', thereby prohibiting the use of any kind of chemical fertilizers in those VDCs.

The VDCs now producing organized fruits, vegetables and grains are Taksera, Ranmamaikot, Jang, Pwang, Kankri Mahat, Morawang, Kanda, Rangsi, Kol, Gotamkot, Syalakhadi, Chunwang, Hukam and Sisne VDVs.

The products of these 15 VDCs will now be certified before being exported outside the VDC, according to Chief of District Agriculture Development Office, Rukum, Kul Prasad Adhikari.

Accordingly, the Office has already made an announcement across the district to stop the distribution and sale of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. And farmers have been encouraged to use organic and bio-fertilizer.

"Declaration of 15 VDCs as organic zone is our first success and it would ultimately benefit the entire district if this is sustained", said Adhikari. The VDCs are well known for apple and potato farming.

However, some locals are unhappy that nothing has been done except for declaring their VDCs as organic zone. "The concerned authorities have not thought any further than the announcement of organic zone", said Parsuram Khadka of Pwang. RSS
