Kathmandu, July 9: The Ministry of Home Affairs has said its serious attention was drawn towards media reports that immigration check posts have been set up in Pashupatinagar and Lumbini and on the modernization of the immigration system at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

Issuing a press statement today, the Ministry said the home-ministerial level meeting between Nepal and India that was held in the capital last month agreed in principle to set up checkpoints at Pashupatinagar and Lumbini on behalf of the Nepal Government and not the check posts by the Government of India. The proposal was presented by the Indian government, according to the Ministry. Besides, the meeting agreed to review the matters of modernizing the immigration system at TIA through diplomatic channels, the Ministry said.

Checkpoints at Pashupatinagar and Lumbini will be set up only going through the due process and after the decision of the Nepal Government, Council of Ministers, the statement mentioned.  According to Immigration Act -2049 BS, the work of immigration body is to monitor arrival of foreigners, their presence and departure and regulate the movement of Nepalis going out, the Ministry said, adding the immigration checkpoints at both places shall be established by the Nepal Government.

The agreement clearly states that setting up checkpoints was not against the national integrity, sovereignty, independence and the constitution of Nepal and it is expected to contribute to making the regulating work effective and to promote tourism, the statement added.  RSS
