Kakre gaun changing identity in okhaldhunga

Okhaldhunga, July 7: Identified as 'kakre gaun' or cucumber village when it started commercial farming of cucumber eighteen years ago, Shahitar of Kuntadevi VDC – 9 in Okhaldhunga district is now established as a model agro village.

At a time when commercial farming was started nowhere in the district, the farmers here had started it with the help of the District Agriculture Office and now they have been making profits of hundreds of thousands of rupees by vegetable and fruit farming.

The village is now a model agro village as the farmers have formed a Singhadevi Fruit Development Farmers Group with 12 members.

Now the group has 20 members and the labour by farmers has encouraged the District Area Agriculture Service Centre Rampur to provide technical cooperation and seeds, said Office Chief Ambika Prasad Luintel.

Although it was called a cucumber village for its producing largest number of cucumbers in the district, it has now got the identity of agriculture model village, said Senior Agriculture Development Officer Yamkumar Shrestha.

Shahitar was cucumber village and now a model agro village with farmers' labor and cooperation of the office for 18 years, he said.

The 20 households made Rs. one million as profit in the past three months with one farmer making at least Rs. 35,000 of profit, said Group Treasurer Purna Bahadur Poudel.

They now produce papaya, orange, lemon, pineapple, jack fruit, mango, guava, and litchi in fruits and cauliflower, cabbage, tomato, chili and beans in vegetables.

The farmers have also started to campaign for developing the village as an organic zone.

We discarded chemical fertilizers as compost fertilizer gave us more production, said CPN-UML leader of Kuntadevi, Arjun Dhamala.

The group also selects three model farmers, and this year Tum Bahadur Poudel was the model farmer. He said farmers in the village compete with each other to become a model farmer. RSS
