Media sector carrier of democracy: FNJ President

Dang, July 7: President of Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ), Shiva Gaunle has said that the media sector is a carrier of democracy.

Speaking at an interaction on ' Role of Media in Institutionalizing Democracy' organized by Reporters Club, Dang, on Saturday, he said the Nepali people have become conscious to raise their fingers at any wrong doings as they were well informed by the media sector.

FNJ President Gaunle claimed that the media sector was active at a time when the state bodies that are considered the backbone of the democracy were passive of late and that the Nepali people have immense faith in the media.

He said, "The journalists have great responsibilities in the present situation so we (journalists) should continue to inform and alert the people."

Similarly, Gaunle said the media sector has passed through pathetic condition though the nation has experienced significant changes in it. The journalists are still facing many professional complications.

During the programme, he said the there are only few journalists who are paid as per the Working Journalists Act.

Gaunle said "The FNJ will always work for the protection of professional rights of the journalists".

FNJ former vice-president, Bipul Pokhrel, central member Prabhat Chalaune, senior trainer  Ghamaraj Luintel, local FNJ President KL Pidit, among others also stressed on the important role of media in the overall development of the country.
